At age twelve he first stepped into the spotlight with the publication of forty of his drawings illustrating a story about a cat by Rainer Maria Rilke, who was then Balthus's mother's lover and a crucial influence on the young boy. From that moment, Balthus has never been out of the public eye. In 1934 his first exhibition, in Paris, stunned the art world. The seven canvases drew attention to his extraordinary technique -- a  mix of tradition and imagination informed by the work of Piero della Francesca, Courbet, and Joseph Reinhardt, but unique to the twenty-six-year-old artist -- and to their provocative content; one of the paintings, The Guitar Lesson, was so powerful in its sadomasochistic imagery that it was deemed necessary to remove it from public display. This is a remarkable biography about a remarkable enigma.... and the author's book is a unique search to understand the nature of this artist and his art.... In 1791, Boswell's 'The Life Of Samuel Johnson' was the first biography to present his subject 'warts and all.' Nicholas Fox Weber brilliantly attempts to do this.... not out of spite as some reviewers insinuate... but out of great admiration and love.... by the end of biography you realize that Weber and Balthus have become close friends.... a wonderful element of this book is the blending of the authors relationship with the artist, facts and facts debunked, narratives about the creation of a painting, analyses of the painting and journeying through Balthus' life and meeting the artists who enhanced it. I recommend this book to anyone who is who admire's Balthus' art... or anyone who admires the art of biography
