Cengage Advantage Books: Essentials of Public Speaking Details

Review "I think what distinguishes it is the emphasis on the speaking process. This process is threaded throughout the text so the student is always reminded of how what is being covered relates to the process. Also, I have not seen the quick-start guide anywhere [else]. This is a great feature which I emphasize in class.""ESSENTIALS OF PUBLIC SPEAKING is a basic introductory textbook that covers the most essential elements of public speaking. The text is easy to read, provides numerous examples, and is very affordable.""The author's style is engaging and friendly, detailed, helped [my students and me] have a beneficial discussion about anxiety and speaking." Reviews

I had to read this textbook for an Individual Communication Studies course during summer school. As this was my first comms class (from which the title has told you) my review on this textbook is limited.PROS:(1) The chapters are relatively short in length averaging 25-30 pages each; other textbooks I've had/seen have 50+ page chapters.(2) The main attribute that exemplifies this textbook's strength is the companion website. The included URL provides... vocabulary flashcards, crossword puzzles, chapter quizzes, as well as other additional resources.CONS:(1) There is an immense amount of information that I believe is too condensed/rushed together.CONCLUSION:With the website in mind this textbook is a great tool for a first time comms student. However, bear in mind that I have only taken one comms course myself and I have no other comms textbooks to compare it to improve this review.
