On a recent trip to the National WWII Museum in New Orleans I packed my usual cameras to capture the experience. A DSLR with a wide angle lens for interior shots and a small pocket digital camera with zoom capabilities which usually serves me well and results in some great photos. For the first time though juggling two cameras felt kind of awkward and my 10 year old pocket digital camera didn’t quite feel like it was giving me enough flexibility to get what I wanted. Doing some research upon getting home I decided to try something new and purchased a Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70 which hopefully would combine the best features of my DSLR and pocket digital cameras. Like many electronic products you buy today the accompanying documentation is slim with the expectation being you’ll go online and download a more comprehensive owner’s manual. Upon un-boxing my Lumix and experimenting with it a bit it quickly became clear that this camera is incredibly complex and sophisticated and neither the paper mini-manual or the downloaded Panasonic manual were enough to guide me. Looking for further help led me to this book; "Photographer’s Guide to the Panasonic Lumix DC-ZS70/TZ90", by Alexander S. White. Mr. White takes Lumix owner’s on a deeper dive than the manufacturer’s documentation, complete with color photos of the various screens and detailed instructions. Given the subject matter it’s a bit dry but well organized and should answer any Lumix owner’s questions on unlocking their camera’s secrets and getting the very best from it. Having this resource will take you through the myriad of menus and choices available allowing users to customize the DC-ZS70 as they wish. If you spend the money and invest in a camera with this level of sophistication it’s well worth the price buying Mr. White’s fine book to complement your ownership experience. Highly recommended!
