Reviews

My copy says the book was published in 1905. My copy was from the library of Charles & Minnie Fox. His brother was a painter in Maine .He ran for governor in Maine on the socialist ticket. Marsden Hartley studied with him briefly. My grandfather bought the estate of Charles Fox and willed me all of the art books in the collection. The book is in a fairly large type face so that it is very readable. It is full of valuable information. Contains 40 black & white photos of Rodin's work. A valuable chapter is a statement on his art by Auguste. He defines his difference with academicism and classicism . He claims to be the latter.Mauclaire says that it is impossible to know the exact dates of Rodin's sculpture.I also own Rodin :the man and his work by Judith Cladel. The Mauclaire is the better book.To digress: I have a recent book on Rodin's watercolors. In noting the difference in the cultural climate in Europe and the United States. Books on Rodin's watercolors at the Rodin Museum are much more erotic. (more later) Winston Hough
